Alicante enjoys an exceptional climate: around 2,850 hours of sunshine a year and fewer than 40 rainy days (AEMET climate normals), a Mediterranean Sea that warms up from May and stays pleasant until November, and some of the mildest winters in Europe. It is no coincidence that the province attracts thousands of French, Belgian and Swiss people every year in search of a second home or a new life in the sun.
But depending on whether you are coming on holiday, to explore the property market or to settle for good, the ideal time will not be the same. Here is our season-by-season guide — with practical advice from our team, which works with Costa Blanca Sales on the southern Costa Blanca and in the Region of Murcia.
Spring in Alicante: the ideal season for everyone
From April to June, Alicante is an almost perfect destination. Temperatures range between 18 and 25 °C, the light is already generous, the sea is starting to warm up and the city’s terraces are lively without being overcrowded. This is the season when the Costa Blanca shows all its charm without the drawbacks of summer.
For prospective buyers, spring is a golden window. Estate agents are available, owners are not yet under pressure from holiday lets, and you can line up property viewings — seafront apartments in Torrevieja, contemporary villas on the hills of Orihuela Costa, village houses to renovate in the hinterland — without the overloaded schedules of summer.
The end of June brings the festive highlight with the Hogueras de San Juan, Alicante’s Midsummer (St John’s) festival, classified as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. A spectacular experience with fireworks, parade floats and monumental bonfires: a good reason to extend your scouting trip into the last week of June.
Summer in Alicante: sun and beaches, but crowds and heat

July and August are the absolute high season. Temperatures regularly climb to between 28 and 35 °C, sometimes more during heatwaves. Playa del Postiguet in Alicante city, the beaches of Calpe at the foot of the Peñón de Ifach and the coves of Orihuela Costa are packed. There is plenty going on, the nightlife is intense and the Mediterranean atmosphere is at its peak.
For families with children, this is the most convenient period: everything is open, there are plenty of activities and the weather is guaranteed. For a property purchase, however, summer has several concrete drawbacks. Asking prices in popular coastal areas are high (as an indication, around €2,550/m² on average in Torrevieja in May 2026 and €3,570/m² in Calpe in June 2026, idealista asking prices) and sellers are less willing to negotiate. Agents are juggling back-to-back viewings. Availability becomes tighter.
Our practical advice: if you visit Alicante in summer, use the trip to soak up the atmosphere of the neighbourhoods that interest you, but book your property viewings and appointments with an adviser for a quieter window. You will save time, and probably money.
Autumn in Alicante: our favourite season for buyers
September, October and even the first half of November: this is our favourite period for supporting buyers on the Costa Blanca, in French, Dutch, English or Spanish. The reason is simple: everything is still there — sunshine, warm sea (24–26 °C in September), open terraces — but the summer crowds have gone. The city breathes, the roads are clear, and sellers are often more willing to negotiate.
It is also the season when our team can give you the time a property purchase really deserves. We organise viewing tours over several days, on the southern Costa Blanca and in the Region of Murcia: a villa in Pilar de la Horadada one morning, a sea-view apartment in Torrevieja in the afternoon, a development in Orihuela Costa the next day. That pace is simply not sustainable in July.
Autumn is also the right time to start your paperwork without rushing: getting your NIE (foreigner identity number), meeting a Spanish notary, opening a local bank account. See our complete guide to buying in Spain to understand each step before you come.
Winter in Alicante: mild, calm and underrated
From December to March, Alicante is a different city. Not cold — far from it. Average temperatures stay between 12 and 18 °C, the sun shines on the vast majority of days and showers, when they come, are brief. It is one of the mildest winters in Western Europe, comparable to a spring in Normandy.
This climate attracts a very specific audience: European retirees escaping long northern winters, remote workers looking to extend their “productive season” in the sun, and buyers who want to test local life before committing. Spending two weeks in Alicante in January gives you a far more accurate picture of everyday reality than a week in August.
On the property side, winter is the season with the widest room for negotiation. Some sellers — particularly non-resident owners who manage their property remotely — accept reasonable offers that the summer market would not have allowed. It is also the period when administrative lead times are shorter at Spanish notaries and banks, which speeds up the buying process.
Frequently asked questions about Alicante
What is the best season to visit Alicante?
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the best balance between pleasant weather, moderate crowds and availability of local services. For a property project, autumn is particularly recommended: agents are available, sellers are more open to negotiation and the paperwork runs smoothly.
What is the weather like in Alicante in winter?
Winter in Alicante is mild and sunny: between 12 and 18 °C from December to February, with little rain and many bright days. There is practically never any frost or snow in the city. A winter far more pleasant than in France, Belgium or the Netherlands.
Are May and September good months to go to Alicante?
Absolutely. May and September are two of the best months of the year in Alicante: ideal temperatures (20–26 °C), a sea that is pleasant for swimming, fewer tourists than in July–August. These are the months we recommend first and foremost to combine discovering the region with relaxed property viewings.
- Spring (April–June) is ideal for every profile: perfect weather, moderate crowds, estate agents available.
- Summer (July–August) suits families on holiday, but is not recommended for property viewings (high prices, reduced availability).
- Autumn (September–October) is our favourite period for buyers: the sea is still warm, the market more flexible, viewing conditions optimal.
- Winter (December–February) is underrated: mild, calm, ideal for testing local life and negotiating a property more easily.
- Whatever the season, obtaining your NIE and preparing your paperwork in advance is essential for a stress-free purchase in Spain.
